Introduction to Scratch

In addition to the expensive WeDo software, there is also an open and free alternative: Scratch. It was created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, and it was designed to learn about computer programming. It is not designed to work exclusively with WeDo set. This also means that you can do a lot more than basic programming. The latest version of Scratch is the 2.0. It works directly on a web browser: no need to install anything but requires constant Internet connection. However, the last version of Scratch that is compatible with WeDo set is the 1.4 version. It is hidden on the web, but you can find it at http://scratch.mit.edu/scratch_1.4/ . It is available for Windows, Linux and even OS X Compared with the WeDo software, Scratch looks a little bit intimidating. You need to remember that this program is also extremely useful. The bottom image shows you a screenshot of this program. This is how it looks when you first open it without the WeDo set connected to the PC. When the WeDo USB hub is connected to the PC, Scratch will immediately show a new menu to control the motor. This is shown below to the right. Fue creado por el Instituto Tecnológico de Massachusetts, MIT, y fue diseñado para aprender acerca de programación de computadoras. No ha sido diseñado para trabajar exclusivamente con el WeDo. Esto también significa que se puede hacer mucho más que programación básica. La última versión de Scratch es la 2.0. Trabaja directamente en un navegador de internet: sin necesidad  de instalar nada pero requiere de una conexión constante a internet. Sin embargo, la última versión compatible de Scratch con  WeDo es la 1.4. Está oculta en la web, pero se puede encontrar en http://scratch.mit.edu/scratch_1.4/. Disponible para Windows, Linux e incluso OS X. Comparado con el software de WeDo, Scratch luce un poco intimidante. Hay que recordar que este programa es extremadamente útil. La imagen de abajo a la izquierda muestra una pantalla de este programa. Así es como luce cuando se abre por primera vez sin tener el WeDo conectado. Cuando el hub USB del WeDo se conecta al PC, Scratch inmediatamente mostrará un menú nuevo para controlar el motor. Esto se ve en la imagen de abajo a la derecha.

If English is not your language, you can change it easily when clicking the globe icon in-between the Scratch logo and the floppy disk icon (the save option), check image below. The bottom right image shows a description of the main areas of Scratch. In addition to being able to learn a full set of programming options, Scratch has the capability of using Sprites: Sprites are programmable animations. So, you can control your WeDo set and also control the Sprite on the screen. Be aware that WeDo kits for Peru contain more bricks than the international version (50 more pieces). So, you may need to improvise or use additional bricks from a second set. Fans from Poland!

We have a pleasant surprise from Poland this time. Paulina Macurek from Eduklasa in Koscierzyna City prepared a wonderful video of her center. They decided to use the helicopter design. That helicopter is really famous! Additionally, we have more fans in Poland, thanks to Monika Matyszewska from Robonauta in the city of Słupsk. They published a picture of another design: Moby-Dick.	Tenemos una grata sorpresa desde Polonia esta vez. Paulina Macurek de Eduklasa en la ciudad de Koscierzyna preparó un video maravilloso de su centro. Ellos decidieron usar el diseño del helicóptero. Tiny Moby-Dick

Since we are celebrating the new year and the first year online, why not having another special post! This special occasion we have a new original design. Perfect for a literature class or a theatrical performance. Today’s we have the entire cast for Moby-Dick, or the Whale: the Whale (well a couple of them), a fishing boat and the captain! If you feel adventurous, you can do a play with the Northwestern, the king crab fishing boat from the reality show: Deadly Catch. Well, you can do your own representation of your favorite story as well. Enjoy!

Ya que estamos celebrando el año nuevo y el primer año en línea, porque no tener otra nota especial! En esta ocasión especial tenemos un nuevo diseño original. Perfecto para una clase de literatura o una obra de teatro. Hoy tenemos todos los personajes de Moby-Dick: la ballena (bueno, dos cachalotes), un barco pesquero y el capitán! Si se sienten aventureros, puedes hacer una obra con el Northwestern, el barco cangrejero de Alaska del programa de televisión: Pesca Mortal. Bueno, también puedes trabajar tu propia historia.
