LEGO WeDo Tilt Sensor
| The LEGO WeDo tilt sensor is one of those devices that has a mind of his own. At first, it is a little tricky to understand how it works. But once you know how it works, its quite simple. Peter Chen has a video explaining what you can observe when you connect the sensor to the computer, and what kind of output produces depending on the tilting side.

LEGO WeDo?
| When thinking about robotics there are many options. For instance, why to use the LEGO WeDo if the LEGO Mindstorms has been available for a while? Let me summarize my journey. Being a Mechanical Engineer Professor in Puerto Rico, I ended up collaborating with the local MSP Program (U.S. Department of Education's Mathematics and Science Partnerships Program),through the Faculty of Education at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan (a program that provides professional development to educators with the goal of student achievement in math and science). They are the experts in Math and Science, but were experimenting with applications with robotics. Our first experience was with the well-known LEGO Mindstorms platform. We discovered what others felt about it: it is great with kids, but the robots take hours to assemble, which is a challenge in an already crowded class schedule. In summary, it's great at home but not that good if used inside the classroom (that is why it is popular in robotics clubs). After that, I was selected to be in charge of robotics workshops for elementary school teachers. The budget for the robots was limited and I needed to evaluate as many platforms as I could in a short period of time. I know robotics has a dark side: computer programming. I remember the classes I taught several years ago at college level, computer programming with C language. What people remember the most is that they hate it and most never use it later. So, if trying to teach computer programming is not easy at college level, what about elementary school level? The first choice is to find a platform where programming is not a mistery, but motivates you to learn the traditional tools of the trade. So, after a while I stumble upon the LEGO WeDo, which is great kit designed for the classroom with a number of activities for the teacher that cover what I could call STEM+A (science, technology, engineering, math, and arts). The box includes instructions for 12 robots + activities. It took me a while to recommend this set over others less expensive. At the end of the day, the ease of programming and diversity of robots won over. Personally, I feel the software is expensive and the kit a bit limited in number of pieces, but the experience it provides is unique. Working with a wonderful group of teachers I'll never forget, since they were more than busy establishing pilot robotics clubs in their schools, I decided to design new robots so they would have additional material for their students. As a result, a blog was developed at legowedopr.blogspot.com. |

| LEGO WeDo is a unique option for learning robotics in elementary school. The kit contains 158 pieces (including motor and sensors), and can be obtained directly from LEGO Education website or through an authorized re-seller, so it's not readily available in stores. There is also a limited edition of 208 pieces for Peru (read below). | At the time of this writing, it costs US$129.95 without software and US$199.95 with software and activity pack. The software and activity pack can be bought separately for US$89.95. There are also discounts when buying in bulk. There is an additional resource set that contains 325 additional blocks (no motor or additional electronics) that costs US$49.95. Still, a bit pricey. | There is also a 208 pieces WeDo limited edition exclusively for Peru at this time. The Goverment of Peru and LEGO's Education group have partnered with the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program to test the WeDo set. The pilot program includes 20,000 schools and 92,000 WeDo sets to be programmed with the XO laptop. Really good news for Peru the combination of WeDo and the XO laptop! Since I know many teachers will also need new class material, I felt compelled to share new designs that go over the 12 original models already included. I hope to add them to this new site. Enjoy.
