WeDo Bubbleship

Once again, a new WeDo+ design. In addition to the base WeDo Set (158 pieces), there are designs that use the WeDo Resource Set (325 additional pieces). LEGO provides 4 designs with instructions, but we will introduce many new models. This time, it is our take on the Bubbleship from the movie Oblivion. Enjoy.

The kids that beat M.I.T. in robotics

Although this is a really old news (from 2006!), it has to do a lot with motivation. A topic that we have talked about before (remember Caine's story?). Why? What do you think if I tell you that kids from a almost unknown high school, with near zero robotic experience and little budget defeated a team from engineering college students from M.I.T. in the national underwater bot championship?Yes it happened, and there is more to it. If life is difficult, you need to add this to their story: The kids belonged to a school with 92% Hispanic population (in this context means a school with huge academic deficiencies) At the time, they were undocumented  immigrants (most were brought as little kids into the country) They got a couple of good things: The support from two science teachers A huge motivation The teachers objective behind this was to let the students know that there were more opportunities in life if they tried. The competition required teams to develop an underwater robot capable of performing several tasks. At the end the teachers decided to sign the team to compete at the expert level (college students) instead of the beginner level (high school students). Better to lose against universities when you are still at high school, right? Well, that was kind of the teachers thinking. What a pleasant surprise at the end. They were competing against the M.I.T. team of 12 university students (6 ocean-engineering, 4 mechanical engineers and 2 computer science majors) with an $11,000 robot. The high school team was only 4 students with an $800 robot. Something happened at the time of the competition:  university teams with big budget robots could not perform as well as the highly motivated kids from the high school. In summary, the important thing is not the technology, is what you can learn with it. If kids are motivated enough, they will keep surprising us. Aunque esta es de verdad una noticia vieja (del 2006!), tiene que ver bastante con la motivación. Un tema que hemos hablado antes (¿recuerdan la historia de Caine?) ¿Por qué? ¿Que dirías si te cuento que un grupo de jóvenes de un escuela casi que desconocida, con poca experiencia de robótica y muy poco dinero vencieron a un grupo de estudiantes de ingeniería del M.I.T. en una competencia nacional de robots bajo el agua? Ocurrió, y hay mucho más aún. Si vivir es difícil, hay que añadir esto a la historia: Pertenecían a una escuela con un 92% de población hispana (en el contexto significa una escuela con muchas deficeincias académicas) A la fecha, eran inmigrantes  indocumentados (fueron traidos bien pequeños al país) Pero contaban con dos cosas a su favor: El apoyo de dos profesores de ciencia Una motivación enorme El objetivo de los maestros detrás de todo era dejarles saber a sus estudiantes de las oportunidades que existen si tan solo lo intentan. La competencia requería desarrollar un robot acuático capaz de realizar varias tareas. Al final, los maestros decidieron inscribir al equipo en el nivel de experto (universidades) en vez del nivel básico (escuelas). Es mejor perder contra universiades que contra otras escuelas, ¿verdad? Más o menos esa fue la idea en mente. Pero que sorpresa se llevaron todos al final. Estaban compitiendo contra un grupo de 12 estudiantes del M.I.T. (6 ingenieros oceánicos, 4 ingenieros mecánicos y 2 de computadoras) con un robot de US $11.000. El equipo de la escuela tenía 4 miembros y un robot de US $800. Pero algo sucedió durante la competencia: los equipos universitarios con grandes presupuestos no pudieron desempeñarse tan bien como los estudiantes altamente motivados de la escuela. En resumen, lo importante no es la tecnología, es lo que puedes aprender con ella. Si están bien motivados, ellos nos seguirán sorprendiendo. Nuevos diseños llegan al blog. En adición al set básico del WeDo (158 piezas), habrán diseños que usen el set extendido de WeDo (325 piezas adicionales). LEGO provee 4 diseños con sus instrucciones, pero nosotros presentaremos muchos más. Esta vez presentamos a la niveladora de terrenos basado en el diseño del CAT 120H. Otro equipo de construcción para trabajo en serio!

HispaBrick Magazine!

We are on the news! We have been collaborating with HispaBrick Magazine in the latest issue. HispaBricks is a news magazine about LEGO products and the LEGO world. HispaBricks started in 2008 as a Spanish language magazine, but it grow up so much, that right now there is also an English language version! Take a look at the different issues, there are incredible articles, marvelous designs, fantastic interviews, brilliant tutorials and more. You can find information about the traditional LEGO bricks, the always surprising LEGO Technic, the creative Mindstorms, and now the mighty WeDo. I sincerely believe that there is enough interesting material to make everybody happy. You can view the magazines online, download them for free, or purchase a printed copy. Salimos en las noticias! Estuvimos colaborando con la Revista HispaBrick en la última edición. Hispabricks es una revista acerca de los productos de LEGO y el mundo de LEGO. HispaBricks inició en el 2008 como una revista en español, pero creció tanto que ahora también hay una versión en inglés.
